Thought For The Week

"Son Of Man"

Last week we examined Jesus as "JESUS OF NAZAETH" or "Jesus the Nazarene." This was all in His identifying with us, people of low estate, and degree. We are able to appreciate the condescension of Christ, and the extreme measures God employed in order to procure our Redemption and Salvation. As we are told in Philippians 2:5-8 referring to Jesus,' "Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. And being found in the fashion as a man" He humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross."

Today we look at the title The "Son of Man," We do know that all four gospels are accounts of Jesus' life and Ministry here on earth, but from different perspective~i. The book of Matthew, Jesus is presented in His Majesty, as King, and Messiah. The book of Mark presents Him as a servant, the servant of God meeting human needs. The book of John presents Him as the Son of God, (John 3:16). However, in the book of Luke Jesus gives Himself the title, as found in Luke 19:10, "For the Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which was lost." 'Those who were lost' refer to us all, all of the human race. This title of Christ, "The Son of Man" is not unique to the New Testament. All through the Old and New Testament, God spoke to His servants, His prophets, addressing them as "son of man" indicative of their frailty, their failing, faltering limited capacity, as sinful, mortal human beings. We must understand that this was not the most endearing of titles, but it accurately describes Jesus Christ and His mission. He became one of us that we might be made as Him, restored to the Image of God, through Christ.

This is where the story of Christmas and the Incarnation is so very important. It is so important that the 'Virgin Birth' is one of the essential tenets of our Christian Faith. Jesus' genealogy, from both of Mary and Joseph, fulfill the Old Testament prophecies in maintaining the purity of the promised blood-line from Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David etc. Rom. 5:15, "For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many." Eph. 2:8-9 "For by grace are ye saved and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works lest any man should boast. (Rom. 5:19) "For if by one man's disobedience, many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous." Jesus is called the second Adam, the One through whom, all that man had lost through the fall elf the first Adam, is restored, even unto full and sweet fellowship with God, the Father. 2 Cor.5:21 For He hath made Him tn be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.

As we study 'Mary's Magnificat' we see a young woman who knew the Word, of God. She was literally repeating Hannah's prayer (the mother of Samuel) found in Luke 1:46-56. She mentioned that God had regarded the low estate of His handmaiden, for behold all generation shall call her blessed. She continued, For He that is mighty had done great things unto her and Holy is His Name. Mary had a clear understanding of the working of the Lord in her life. She fully and unreservedly yielded herself by saying, Luke 1:38 Behold the handmaid of the Lord; "Be it unto me according to thy wordl

Thus Jesus authentically became the 'Son of Man.' The Word tells us He was tempted in all points as we are yet without sin. He was the Son of Man without the pollution and contamination of sin, which would have precluded His being our Savior and Redeemer. As the Son of Man He was able to subject Himself to death, even the death of the cross, thus exposing an exploding the mystery "how can the immortal die? When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Matt 16:15-16 “Whom do men say that I, the Son of man am? And Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. The great mystery is that the Son of Man and the Son of God are one and the same person. As the Son of God, He was able to claim immortality, being equal with God the Father, whereas as the Son of Man, He was able to lay aside His Divinity, in order to die for our sins; being the Lamb of God that taketh the sin of the world. (Heb. 10:7-14) tell us what Christ was able to accomplish for us being the Son of Man. We are indeed grateful for that 'Son of Man' who indeed came to seek and to save me, to save us who were lost.
